ABOUT THIS ALEBRIJE
This Ram Alebrije was hand crafted in San Martín Tilcajete, Oaxaca at the Jimenez family workshop. Their Alebrijes are unique because instead of the traditional Zapotec patterns, they decorate their Alebrijes with flowers. The base dominant tone is blue.
Except for the ears and tail, The ram was carved from a single block of Copal Wood from the copal tree, which is considered sacred by the Oaxacan Zapotec culture.
As shown in Coco, the movie; Zapotec indigenous people believe that every person has a guardian or spiritual guide. Such protectors are called Tonas and are linked to the qualities of a particular animal. This ram alebrije can be considered as a modern Tona: a symbol of endurance, perseverance and strength.
