Mexican Art Wax Sculpture Couple Making day of the Dead Altar

ABOUT THIS MEXICAN FOLK ART WAX SCULPTURE

This outstanding wax sculpture was crafted in Michoacan, Mexico. It depicts an elder couple by a table. They are preparing a day of the dead altar. He is holding a piece of tissue paper with cut out shapes, commonly used during popular festivities, including the day of the dead. The woman holds in her hands a beautifully crafted basket. The table has a collection of altar elements gracefully displayed. These elements include flowers, candles, limes, bread, pumpkin candy and a pot with milk. All of them made of wax. The table is made of wood and next to it is a bouquet of flowers masterfully achieved.

The faces are finely made and the detail of the hair on both figures is remarkable. Both wear the traditional Purépecha indigenous clothing. He is wearing a white cotton costume with an embroidered geometric pattern in blue and a belt. She wears a black skirt with an embroidered apron and a blouse  with a flower beautifully embroidered.  

It was crafted in Michoacán, Mexico, the heart of the Purépecha culture and one of the places where the day of the dead is celebrated at its best.
