ABOUT THIS OAXACAN ETCHED GOURD
This alluring etched gourd depicts the performance of a Danzón, the traditional music of one of the main regions of Oaxaca; the Mixteca Oaxaqueña.
The aesthetics of the gourd is simple and beautiful: the scenario is not a dancing hall nor a sumptuous place, but the yard outside the houses of the village under a sky plenty of stars. A party scenario beautifully represented where men and women gather to dance, sing, play and drink. The border of the gourd is decorated by a band of flying birds that remind us of the other side: the day after the party night.
The piece is signed at the bottom by Marco Antonio Cruz Santiago, a skilled artist who knew how to observe and share the beauty of the every day life of he Mixtec People.
