Miniatre Mexican Clay Tree of Life Nativity from Metepec

ABOUT THIS MEXICAN TREE OF LIFE

This outstanding miniature tree of life was hand crafted in Metepec.A  town located in central Mexico, worldwide known for the high quality of it´s pottery. It  beautifully displays a nativity or creche with baby Jesus, Virgin Mary, St. Joseph, the angel and the animals. Above, is God father holding the world in his hand. 

The whole tree of life is surrounded with flowers and butterflies. You may also see the sun and the moon at the very top of it. The latter are usually present in the tree of life as symbols of  the masculine, the feminine and the dual nature of existence. An important reminiscence of the rich pre hispanic culture; where all the pottery tradition begun. 

Making each tree of life takes many days of dedication from picking up and sifting the clay, molding the piece to placing it in the oven and finally arriving to the utmost delicate process of painting. 

Mastering this craft is a process that takes years and is transmitted from one generation to the next. Usually the artists learn the technique at a very young age while playing with clay in their family workshops.
