Ocumicho Devil with Whistles Michoacán Surreal Art, fine Pottery
ABOUT THIS OCUMICHO CERAMIC PIECE
This fantastic & Surreal pottery piece was crafted in Ocumicho, Michoacán, A place world famous for the quality of its pottery and surreal creations such as devils and other fantastic creatures. This piece in particular depicts a devil surrounded by 36 birds. The devil is holding a cage on his left hand and some fish on his right hand. The contrast between the cage & the fish is interesting, it creates an intriguing statement towards freedom and life, since fish cannot fly and the cage is empty.
Such mystery is perhaps solved if we "read" the fish as bait for the birds that attentively look at the devil. Such birds are also whistles and each was finely modeled and painted. The devil is also very finely crafted and on his back, it wears a conic basket covered by a blanket.
