Mexican Black Clay Jaguar Amatenango del Valle Chiapas Pottery Art

$195.00 USD
CC2005

ABOUT THIS MEXICAN POTTERY PIECE

This facing right clay jaguar is one of a kind. A fine Mexican pottery piece crafted in a town called Amatenango del Valle in the state of Chiapas. It  was completely hand molded and  crafted by Tzeltal indigenous people.
It is crafted using the black clay technique where the clay acquires its black tone during the firing process by oxidation.  The spots of the jaguar are etched directly on the clay with no paint. Only a few strokes of white paint are added to create an hypnotizing effect on the eyes.
Jaguar is an animal very important in Mexican culture. Since pre columbian times is considered as a guardian and an important symbol of power and authority.  At  Carapan, our folk art gallery you will find this and more fine Mexican pottery for sale
