ABOUT THIS ALEBRIJE

This gazelle Oaxacan Alebrije wood carving  was crafted in San Martín Tilcajete, Oaxaca at the renowned Jimenez family workshop
Alebrijes painted by the Jimenez family are unique because instead of the traditional Zapotec patterns, they are beautifully decorated with flowers. Such flowery decoration and the artist´s signature are unequivocal sighs that this gazelle is an authentic Alebrije crafted at the renowned Jimenez workshop. However, each of the Jimenez brothers has a unique style. You can notice that by comparing this gazelle crafted by Cándido with the other one displayed in our gallery, made by Alberto.

The horns, and ears are detachable to facilitate transportation. The  gazelle was all made of copal wood from the copal tree, which is considered sacred by the Oaxacan Zapotec culture

As shown in Coco, the movie; Zapotec indigenous people believe that every person has a guardian or spiritual guide. Such protectors are called Tonas and are linked to the qualities of a particular animal. This gazelle alebrije can be considered as a modern Tona: a symbol of mindfulness, peace and grace.
