ABOUT THIS ALEBRIJE
This is an authentic Oaxacan wood carving. It depicts a Xoloitzcuintle dog, the sacred animal of the Aztecs that helped to cross to the Mictlan after death. It was made of copal wood in San Martin Tilcajete, Oaxaca. Zapotec indigenous people did this outstanding wooden alebrije.
Coco, the movie; did a thorough research and a beautiful representation of the Mexican tradition of Alebrijes. in the movie, Alebrijes are part of a tale in which Miguel crosses to the world of the dead with the help of a Dante, a Xoloiscuintli dog.
The Xoloitzcuintle dog is beautifully decorated with traditional patterns. Such decorative patterns, commonly known as "grecas" can be found at the pyramids of Mitla and Monte Alban, benchmark of the pre hispanic Zapotec civilization. The grecas are so meticulously painted, that an agave cactus thorn was used instead of a brush for the thiner strokes.
The beautiful painting and the excellent wood carving make this Oaxacan Xoloitzcuintle dog alebrije unique and valuable.
