Tonala Burnished Clay Retablo with Jesus Crucifixion

ABOUT THIS TONALA BURNISHED CLAY POTTERY PIECE

This outstanding Tonala burnished clay retablo was crafted in Tonala, Mexico by ceramics master Moises Rodriguez, one of the most renowned and awarded Mexican Folk artists. The retablo is composed by three main panels. The one on the left has an angel, the one on the right the virgin with baby Jesus and at the center a scene with Jesus descent from the cross aided by Virgin Mary and other saints.

Mr. Rodirguez is a respected artist in Tonala and his pieces valued amongst collectors and Mexican Folk Art connoisseurs. He has won many awards and prizes. 

Tonalá is a small city outside of Guadalajara in the Mexican state of Jalisco, where potters combine ancient and modern techniques to create a regional tradition that is taught from one generation to the next since pre-Columbian times.
