ABOUT THIS ALEBRIJE

This green wasp is an authentic Oaxacan Alebrije wood carving. It was hand crafted in San Martin Tilcajete, Oaxaca by Zapotec indigenous people.  The wasp is made of copal wood, which is considered as sacred tree and completely hand carved, which makes it unique and special. The wings, antenas and legs are detachable to facilitate a safe transportation. It is also entirely painted by hand with the creativity and talent of Oaxacan artists.
As shown in Coco, the movie; Zapotec indigenous people believe that every person has a guardian or spiritual guide. Such protectors are called Tonas and are linked to the qualities of a particular animal. This  wasp alebrije can be considered as a modern Tona: a symbol of communication, constructive abilities, team work, development and organizational skills
