This Raccoon Alebrije is an authentic Oaxacan wood carving. It was hand crafted in Arrazola, Oaxaca at the Franco family workshop. except for the tail which is detachable to facilitate transportation, It was carved from a single block of wood, . The raccoon is decorated with traditional Oaxacan Zapotec patterns in black over an elegant and balanced blue & white palette. 

Such decorative patterns, commonly known as "grecas"  can be found at the pyramids of Mitla and Monte Alban, benchmark of the Indigenous Zapotec civilization. The grecas are so meticulously painted that an agave thorn was used instead of a brush for the thiner strokes.
