Peacock Alebrije Oaxacan Wood Carving from Arrazola
ABOUT THIS ALEBRIJE
This peacock is an authentic Oaxacan Alebrije wood carving. It was hand crafted in Arrazola, Oaxaca at the Carrillo family workshop.
It was all made of copal wood. The feathers of the tail are completely detachable and are beautifully painted in an intense orange palette.
The wings and body painted in blue are beautifully decorated with ancient indigenous symbols of the Zapotec culture. Such patterns, commonly known as "grecas" can be found at the decoration of the pyramids of Mitla and Monte Albán.
Coco, the movie has made Alebrijes quite popular. The production of the movie got inspired in alebrijes and Mexican Folk art to create characters like pepita and Dante. if you are an enthusiast of fine Oaxacan wood carvings, this peacock is an excellent choice begin or continue with your collection.
