 About this Alebrije

This outstanding cow head wood carving Alebrije was crafted and hand painted in San Martín Tilcajete, Oaxaca.

It is beautifully decorated with a detailed geometric pattern of Zapotec symbols in  mustard and purple tones. The ears, mouth and nose are decorated  using a palette of turquoise and pink tones. 

 The carving is made from a single block Copal Wood, from the copal tree, which is considered sacred.

Coco, the movie depicts Alebrijes as  spiritual guides based on their research on Zapotec indigenous culture from Oaxaca, origin of this amazing art
