Blue Pegasus Alebrije Oaxacan, Mexican Wood Carving
ABOUT THIS ALEBRIJE
This Pegasus alebrije is a Mexican wood carving crafted and hand painted in San Martín Tilcajete, Oaxaca. It was crafted using a beautiful blue, black & white palette. The pattern used to decorate the piece is inspired in ancient Zapotec symbols. The wings & tail are detachable to facilitate transportation.
The carving is made of Copal wood, a tree considered as sacred by the Zapotec indigenous people. It grows in the nearby mountains of San Martín. Reforestation projects are held by the community in order to preserve this important source of creation.
As shown in Coco, the movie; Zapotec indigenous people believe that every person has a guardian or spiritual guide. Such protectors are called Tonas and are linked to the qualities of a particular animal. This pegasus alebrije can be considered as a modern Tona: a symbol imagination & vsion.
